Sindh recorded the lowest monsoon rainfall among Pakistan’s provinces. The province received only 71.1mm of rain between July 1 and September 30, which was 50.8% below normal.

Karachi experienced an even sharper shortfall, with rainfall during the monsoon season remaining 92% below normal.

Balochistan

Balochistan also experienced a substantial rainfall deficit. Monsoon rainfall in the province remained 33.7% below the normal level.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded 16.3% less rainfall than normal during the three-month monsoon period.

Azad Jammu and Kashmir

Azad Jammu and Kashmir received 18.4% less rainfall than normal, according to the PMD figures.

Punjab

Punjab recorded a comparatively smaller rainfall deficit, with monsoon precipitation 3.8% below normal.

Gilgit-Baltistan

Gilgit-Baltistan was the only region in the country to record above-normal monsoon rainfall. Rainfall there remained 4.6% higher than normal.

Overall, Pakistan received 120.5mm of rainfall during the 2026 monsoon season, marking a 19.3% shortfall compared with normal rainfall.

The PMD attributed the weaker monsoon activity partly to the formation and effects of El Niño. According to the department, El Niño can alter global and regional weather patterns and influence the intensity and distribution of monsoon rainfall across South Asia.

The PMD also noted that several neighbouring countries experienced significantly below-normal monsoon rainfall during the season.
